ER 316H is a high-carbon stainless steel welding filler metal, essentially a modified 316 grade, designed for high-temperature service (up to ~1290F / 700C) by offering increased tensile and yield strength, superior creep resistance, and good pitting resistance in chloride environments, commonly used in power generation, petrochemical, and furnace applications. It provides better high-temp performance than standard 316 or 316L, maintaining ductility and toughness at cryogenic temperatures while being easily weldable.
Key Characteristics:
High Carbon Content: Restricted to the upper end of the 316 range (0.04-0.08% C), boosting strength at high temperatures.
Molybdenum Content: Provides excellent creep resistance and pitting corrosion resistance in halide environments.
Strength: Offers higher tensile and yield strength at elevated temperatures compared to 316/316L.
Corrosion Resistance: Good resistance to general corrosion, pitting, and crevice corrosion, especially in chloride-containing media.
Non-Magnetic: Non-magnetic in the annealed condition.
Weldability: Excellent weldability and fabricability using standard shop practices.
Common Applications:
Steam Piping & Superheater Headers
Furnace Parts & Turbine Components
Chemical & Petrochemical Industry Equipment
Power Generation Plants (Nuclear & Conventional)
Pulp & Paper Industry Equipment
Used For Welding:
Base metals like 316H, 316, 321/321H, and 347/347H.
