About ER 308Lsi
ER 308LSi is a low-carbon, chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steel welding wire (AWS A5.9) with added silicon (Si) for improved weldability, providing excellent corrosion resistance, especially against intergranular attack, making it ideal for welding 304/304L stainless steels in pipes, tanks, and food/chemical industries, offering good mechanical properties and crack resistance due to controlled ferrite.
Key Characteristics:
- Composition: 20% Chromium, 9-10% Nickel, very low Carbon (<0.03%), with elevated Silicon (0.65-1.0%).
- Low Carbon (L): Reduces carbide precipitation, preventing intergranular corrosion (IGC).
- High Silicon (Si): Improves arc stability, smoother flow, better wetting, and weld bead appearance in MIG/GMAW welding, reducing spatter.
- Ferrite Content: Controlled ferrite (5-10%) in the weld metal provides resistance to hot cracking.
- Properties: Strong, ductile, non-magnetic, excellent corrosion resistance, good mechanical strength, and radiographic quality welds.
Applications:
- Welding austenitic stainless steels like AISI 301, 302, 304, 304L, 308, 308L.
- Food processing, chemical, and petrochemical industries.
- Pipework, tanks, vessel fabrication, and overlays.
Welding Process:
- Used in MIG (Gas Metal Arc Welding) and TIG processes.
- Typically uses Argon shielding gas.
- Requires DCEP (Direct Current Electrode Positive) for GMAW.
