About ER 410
ER410 is a 12% chromium martensitic stainless steel filler metal used in welding for applications needing good strength, hardness, and resistance to corrosion, erosion, and abrasion, often on 410-type steels or as an overlay on carbon steels, requiring preheat and post-weld heat treatment for ductility. It's an air-hardening alloy, forming a hard, martensitic microstructure in the weld deposit, making it ideal for components like valve seats and turbine parts.
Key Characteristics
- Composition: Contains approximately 12% Chromium (Cr) and enough Carbon (C) to be air-hardenable.
- Microstructure: Produces a hard, martensitic weld metal.
- Properties: Offers good strength, wear resistance (galling, abrasion, erosion), and corrosion resistance at high temperatures.
- Heat Treatment: Requires preheating and post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) to achieve adequate ductility and prevent cracking.
Typical Applications
- Welding and repairing 12% Cr stainless steels (Types 410, 416, 420, 431).
- Overlaying carbon and low-alloy steels for wear resistance.
- Surfacing steam and gas turbine blades and high-pressure valve seats.
Welding Considerations
