ER 5556 is a high-strength aluminum-magnesium-manganese alloy welding wire (AlMg5Mn) used for welding 5XXX series aluminum alloys (like 5083, 5454, 5556) and some 6XXX series, offering superior tensile strength, excellent corrosion resistance, and good crack resistance, making it ideal for marine, pressure vessel, and transport applications, suitable for MIG & TIG processes, but not for elevated temperatures above 150F.
Key Characteristics:
Composition: High Magnesium (around 5%) and Manganese for strength and corrosion resistance.
Strength: Provides higher tensile strength than ER5356, offering high as-welded strength.
Corrosion Resistance: Excellent, due to high Mg and Mn content, ideal for marine use.
Crack Resistance: Enhanced crack resistance compared to other alloys.
Appearance: White color after anodizing.
Applications: Marine structures, pressure vessels, automotive parts, general fabrication.
Processes: Used for both MIG (GMAW) and TIG (GTAW) welding.
Limitations:
Not recommended for prolonged service at elevated temperatures (above 150F) due to susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking, notes D/F Machine Specialties
