About ER 312

ER312 is a high-ferrite, two-phase stainless steel filler metal (wire/rod) used for welding difficult-to-join materials, especially dissimilar metals like stainless to carbon steel, offering excellent crack resistance due to its microstructure. It's ideal for repairs, overlays, and joining steels with high carbon, chromium, or nickel content, providing good strength and ductility, though it's limited to a few layers when welding similar cast alloys to prevent brittleness.

Key Characteristics:

High Ferrite Content: Creates a tough, two-phase weld deposit resistant to cracking.
Dissimilar Metal Welding: Excellent for joining stainless steel to mild steel or other alloy steels.
Repair & Overlay: Used for building up worn tools, dies, armor plate, and hard-facing.
Material Compatibility: Joins high-carbon steels, spring steels, tool steels, and nickel-alloyed steels.
Application: Suitable for GMAW (MIG) and GTAW (TIG) processes.

Important Considerations:

Layer Limitation: Limit welds on similar cast alloys to 2-3 layers to maintain properties.
Service Temperature: Best used below 800F (427C) to avoid forming brittle phases.
