About ER CuSi

"ERCuSi" most commonly refers to ERCuSi-A, a silicon bronze welding filler metal used for TIG and MIG welding/brazing of copper alloys and steel, including galvanized steel. The "ER" stands for electrode or rod, "Cu" for copper, and "Si" for silicon.
Composition
ERCuSi-A is a copper-based alloy that typically contains approximately 2.8% to 4.0% silicon, with small amounts of other elements like manganese, tin, iron, and zinc. This composition gives it desirable properties for welding.
Key Properties
  • High Strength & Durability: The silicon content increases the tensile strength and hardness of the weld deposit.
  • Excellent Corrosion Resistance: It offers superior long-term resistance to corrosion, making it suitable for marine environments.
  • Good Weldability: The alloy has comprehensive weldability, providing a stable arc and smooth flow.
  • Low Melting Point: With a melting temperature around 1000C (compared to steel's 1500C), it allows for a cooler welding process, which minimizes heat input and reduces material distortion.
  • Aesthetic Appeal: The resulting gold-colored welds are often used for aesthetic purposes in metal art and automotive body work.
Applications
ERCuSi-A is a versatile filler metal used across various industries:
  • Joining Dissimilar Metals: Used to weld copper-silicon, copper-zinc, brass, and bronze alloys to themselves and to steel or cast iron.
  • Galvanized Steel: A significant application is the "braze-welding" (MIG brazing) of plain and galvanized sheet steel, especially in automotive panel work, because the lower heat input does not burn off the zinc coating as traditional welding would.
  • Surfacing: Used for overlay welding on steel or cast iron to provide wear resistance or corrosion-resistant surfaces.
  • Artistic Creations: Its good flow and color make it popular for artistic and architectural metalwork.
