About E 317L - 16

E317-16 (or E317L-16) refers to a rutile-coated stainless steel welding electrode for creating weld metal similar to 317/317L stainless steel, offering superior resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion due to its higher molybdenum content (around 3%) compared to 316 types, making it ideal for severe corrosive environments like chemical plants and food processing, providing excellent radiographic quality welds in various positions.

Key Characteristics:

Composition: Deposits an extra-low carbon (L), 19% Cr, 12% Ni, 3% Mo stainless steel weld.
Corrosion Resistance: Excellent resistance to general corrosion, intergranular corrosion, and pitting/crevice corrosion, especially in acidic or chloride-rich environments.
High Temperature: Improved high-temperature creep strength and resistance to hot cracking compared to 316 types.
Weld Quality: Produces X-ray quality welds with good mechanical properties and easy slag removal.
Applications: Welding ASTM 317/317L steels in chemical, pharmaceutical, paper, and food processing industries, as well as dissimilar joints.
