About E Ni-Ci
E Ni-Ci (AWS A5.15) is a pure nickel-cored welding electrode for cast iron, prized for its highly machinable, soft weld deposit, making it ideal for repairing cracks, joining cast iron to steel, and correcting machining errors on parts like engine blocks, where high strength isn't the primary concern but excellent machinability and crack resistance are. It offers good cold welding properties with little or no preheat, though some preheating (around 350F) is often recommended for better results.
Key Characteristics:
- Core: Nearly pure nickel.
- Coating: Graphite-based.
- Weld Deposit: Soft, ductile, easily machinable, excellent crack resistance, good color match to cast iron.
- Applications: Repairing cracked cast iron, joining cast iron to steel, building up surfaces, correcting errors on engine parts, machine tool guides.
- Welding: Works on AC/DC, stable arc, suitable for short beads, can be used with or without preheat (though recommended).
When to Use:
- When maximum machinability of the weld is needed.
- For repairing thin-walled or highly contaminated cast iron.
- For joining cast iron to other metals like steel.
Alternative:
- For higher strength, use ENiFe-Ci (nickel-iron), which provides a harder, stronger weld but is less machinable than ENi-Ci.
