About ER 309L

ER309L is a low-carbon stainless steel welding wire (AWS A5.9) known for welding dissimilar metals, especially stainless steel to carbon/low alloy steels, offering excellent corrosion resistance, high strength, and crack resistance due to its balanced Chromium (Cr) and Nickel (Ni) content and ferrite formation. Its "L" (low carbon) designation prevents intergranular corrosion, making it ideal for buffer layers, clad steels, and high-temperature applications (below 400C/600F).

Key Characteristics

Composition: Contains higher Cr and Ni than ER308, compensating for dilution when joining dissimilar metals.
Low Carbon (L Grade): Max 0.03% Carbon to prevent carbide precipitation, enhancing corrosion resistance.
Ferritic Structure: Forms ferrite in the weld, providing good crack resistance.
Mechanical Properties: Offers high strength, good toughness, and excellent high-temperature oxidation resistance.

Common Applications

Dissimilar Welds: Welding stainless steels (like 18/8) to carbon or low alloy steels.
Buffer Layers: Creating a transition layer on carbon steel before applying a stainless steel cladding.
