About ER 309Lsi

ER 309LSi is a low-carbon, high-silicon stainless steel filler metal (wire/rod) known for welding dissimilar metals (like stainless to carbon steel) and similar stainless steels, offering excellent wetting for smooth beads, good corrosion resistance, and good high-temperature strength, with the 'Si' (silicon) improving weldability and appearance compared to standard 309L.

Key Characteristics:

Material: Austenitic stainless steel.
Low Carbon ('L'): Reduces carbide precipitation, increasing resistance to intergranular corrosion.
High Silicon ('Si'): Improves weld pool fluidity, wetting action, and bead appearance, making it easier to weld.
Excellent for Dissimilar Metals: Ideal for joining stainless steel to carbon steel or mild steel.
Good for Clad Steels: Used for overlaying or joining clad steels.
High Temperature Performance: Offers good heat and corrosion resistance up to around 300C (572F).
Weldability: Smooth, fluid weld beads, good for GMAW (MIG) and GTAW (TIG).

Common Applications:

Food service and beverage tanks.
Joining 18% Cr / 8% Ni stainless steels.
Buffering/buttering stainless steel surfaces.
Welding 3Cr12 steels.
