ER 410NiMo is a high-strength martensitic stainless steel filler metal (wire/rod) used for welding similar cast and wrought steels, offering excellent corrosion, pitting, and cracking resistance, along with good toughness, especially at subzero temperatures, making it ideal for hydro turbines, fans, and demanding industrial applications. It's a modified 410 stainless steel with added nickel and molybdenum, improving its mechanical properties and weldability, and often requires preheating and post-weld heat treatment.
Key Characteristics
Type: Martensitic Stainless Steel Filler Wire/Rod (AWS ER 410NiMo).
Composition: Contains ~12% Chromium, ~4-5% Nickel, and ~0.5% Molybdenum.
Properties: High tensile strength, good toughness, excellent resistance to corrosion, pitting, and sulfide stress corrosion cracking (SSCC).
Structure: Deposits a martensitic weld metal, but nickel content can lead to retained austenite, notes ScienceDirect.
Applications
Welding of cast and wrought materials like AISI 410NiMo.
Hydro-electric power plant components (fans, blades, fittings).
Water and steam turbines.
Heavy fabrication requiring strength and corrosion resistance.
Welding Considerations
Preheat: Often requires preheating (e.g., above 300F or 150C) to prevent cracking in the hard martensitic structure, according to Venus Wires and Caston Electrode Company.
Post-Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT): Stress relieving or tempering after welding is recommended for optimal ductility.
